Ashish Kallikkattil Kuruvila recently joined the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence as an Assistant Researcher A’ in the Environment and Climate Department. He holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Karunya University, India, and a master’s degree in Space and Astronautical Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome. His master’s thesis focused on monitoring sea surface temperature in coral reef regions using optical remote sensing. Following graduation, he received a fellowship at the EOSIAL laboratory of Sapienza University, where he contributed to the SatellOmic project, a collaboration between the Italian Space Agency, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, and Sapienza University. He was involved in developing a mobile application for monitoring water quality parameters in inland water bodies across Italy, integrating satellite imagery with in-situ data. His research also included developing algorithms for assessing chlorophyll-a (HABs), suspended solids, and Secchi depth using multispectral and hyperspectral imagery. Additionally, he worked on detecting oil spills in open waters and designed indices to identify cyanobacteria (Planktothrix rubescens) in clear and turbid waters. His research interests focus on remote sensing applications for water quality assessment and sustainable agricultural practices.
