Information Campaign in Schools by the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
The initial phase of the campaign involved two schools in Limassol, one primary and one secondary, where over 230 students were informed about the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and the role and mission of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence.
A significant gender gap has persisted throughout the years in all levels of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines worldwide. Despite women making tremendous progress in increasing their participation in higher education, they remain underrepresented in these fields.
Gender equality has always been a core issue for the United Nations. Achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls will not only contribute to the economic development of the world but also to progress across all the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The mission of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is to conduct both basic and applied research towards improving understanding, management, and monitoring of natural resources and infrastructures. It aims to offer expert services and products of excellent quality, in line with the latest developments in Remote Sensing, geospatial technologies, and other high-tech tools. The vision of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is to become a world-class Digital Innovation Hub for Earth Observation, space technology, and Geospatial Information, serving as the reference Centre in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa. It is expected to employ more than 150 researchers in the next 15 years.
