International Day for Monuments and Sites – 18 April 2024

World Heritage Day is celebrated worldwide on April 18. Also known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites, it was established by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) on April 18, 1982, and later endorsed by UNESCO at its 22nd General Conference in 1983. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage, the need for its protection and conservation, and the importance of preserving heritage sites globally.

The Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence is at the forefront of efforts to safeguard cultural and historical heritage threatened by natural and man-made disasters. It is currently involved in a series of innovative EU-funded research projects that utilize space-born and remote sensing techniques, among others.

The ENIGMA project leverages a wide array of advanced technologies to combat the illicit trafficking of cultural property. Meanwhile, the TRIQUERTA project focuses on developing a toolkit to protect heritage and archaeological sites at risk from natural disasters and climate change. Additionally, the REVITALISER project aims to enhance the Eratosthenes Centre’s capabilities in heritage protection by collaborating with experienced institutions across Europe, positioning the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence as a leader in the Cultural Property Protection domain in Cyprus and beyond.
