International Symposium on Cultural Property Protection Held by ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence
Global experts to gather in Nicosia on 20–21 April 2026 to strengthen cooperation against the illicit trafficking of cultural heritage
Nicosia, Cyprus — The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence of the Cyprus University of Technology, through the EXCELSIOR H2020 Teaming Project and its Cultural Heritage Cluster, hosted the International Symposium “Cultural Property Protection as an enabler for cooperation in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Gulf region” on 20–21 April 2026 at the Constantine Leventis Auditorium of the A.G. Leventis Gallery in Nicosia.
Bringing together more than twenty high-level speakers from European institutions, international organisations, law enforcement agencies, museums, academia, and national authorities, the Symposium addressed one of the most pressing global challenges facing cultural heritage today: the illicit trade in cultural property and the looting of archaeological sites.
The event was held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and with sponsorship of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, and the Embassy of Italy in Cyprus. The Symposium was officially endorsed and supported by the Deputy Ministry of Culture of Cyprus, the Department of Antiquities, the Cyprus Police, the UNESCO National Committee and the European External Action Service.
A Strategic Dialogue at the Crossroads of Three Regions
Aligned with the Political Guidelines of the European Commission (2024–2029) and their pillar “Reuniting our societies, supporting our young people”, the Symposium positions Cyprus and the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence as a strategic regional hub at the crossroads of Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Gulf region.
Over two days, participants explored and discusses legal, criminological, technological, and geopolitical perspectives on cultural property protection through four thematic sessions:
- European and International Institutional Perspectives
- Operational Tools and Field Applications
- Museums and National Authorities in Cultural Property Protection
- Legal and Criminological Perspectives
High-Level Participation
The Opening Ceremony was held on the 20 April 2026 featuring the welcome remarks by H.E. Vassiliki Kassianidou, Deputy Minister of Culture of Cyprus; Dr Panicos Pourgourides, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus; H.E. Antonella Cavallari, Ambassador of Italy in Cyprus; H.E. Sergii Nizhynskyi, Ambassador of Ukraine in Cyprus; Dr Katariina Leinonen, Head of Division for the Integrated Approach for Peace and Security at the European External Action Service; Ms Medea Sogor Ekner, Director General of ICOM; and Professor Diofantos Hadjimitsis, Managing Director of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence.
Keynote speakers included representatives from the European Commission DG EAC, ICOM, ICCROM, UNODC, INTERPOL, the OSCE Heritage Crime Task Force, the Italian Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, the Cyprus Police, Qatar Museums, Qatar National Library, the Saudi Heritage Commission, the Hungarian National Museum, the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, and leading academic institutions including Maastricht University, the University Cattolica of Milan, and the Ionian University UNESCO Chair. The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence presented V.E.R.I.T.A.S., an AI-driven platform developed in-house for the identification of trafficked artworks in online markets, showcasing Cyprus’s groundbreaking contribution to cutting-edge heritage protection technologies.

ABOUT THE ERATOSTHENES CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is a research and innovation centre based in Limassol, Cyprus, established under the EXCELSIOR project (Excellence Research Centre for Earth Surveillance and Space-Based Monitoring of the Environment). The project was funded under the Horizon 2020 – Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation / Teaming Phase 2 programme, with a total investment of over €38 million.
The Centre specialises in Earth Observation, Remote Sensing, Space Technology, and Geoinformatics. Through its Cultural Heritage Unit, it develops advanced methodologies and technologies for the documentation, monitoring, and protection of cultural heritage across Europe, the Mediterranean, and beyond.

Διεθνές Συμπόσιο για την Προστασία της Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς διοργάνωσε το Κέντρο Αριστείας ERATOSTHENES
Λευκωσία — Με επιτυχία ολοκληρώθηκε το Διεθνές Συμπόσιο με τίτλο «Cultural Property Protection as an Enabler for Cooperation in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Gulf Region», το οποίο διοργάνωσε το Κέντρο Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ του Τεχνολογικού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, μέσω του έργου EXCELSIOR H2020 Teaming Project και του Τομέα Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς (Cultural Heritage Cluster). Το Συμπόσιο πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 20 και 21 Απριλίου 2026, στο Αμφιθέατρο «Κωνσταντίνος Λεβέντης» της Πινακοθήκης Α.Γ. Λεβέντη, στη Λευκωσία.
Η διοργάνωση συγκέντρωσε περισσότερους από είκοσι διακεκριμένους ομιλητές διεθνούς κύρους, εκπροσωπώντας ευρωπαϊκούς θεσμούς, διεθνείς οργανισμούς, αρχές επιβολής του νόμου, μουσεία, ακαδημαϊκά ιδρύματα και εθνικούς φορείς. Κοινός στόχος αποτέλεσε η ενίσχυση της συνεργασίας για την αντιμετώπιση μιας από τις πλέον επείγουσες παγκόσμιες προκλήσεις: της παράνομης διακίνησης πολιτιστικών αγαθών και της λεηλασίας αρχαιολογικών χώρων.
Το Συμπόσιο τελούσε υπό την αιγίδα της Κυπριακής Προεδρίας του Συμβουλίου της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και χρηματοδοτήθηκε από την Αντιπροσωπεία της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής στην Κύπρο και την Πρεσβεία της Ιταλίας στην Κύπρο. Πραγματοποιήθηκε επίσης με την υποστήριξη του Υφυπουργείου Πολιτισμού της Κύπρου, του Τμήματος Αρχαιοτήτων, της Αστυνομίας Κύπρου, της Κυπριακής Εθνικής Επιτροπής UNESCO και της Ευρωπαϊκής Υπηρεσίας Εξωτερικής Δράσης.
Στρατηγικός διάλογος στο σταυροδρόμι τριών περιοχών
Σε ευθυγράμμιση με τις Πολιτικές Κατευθυντήριες Γραμμές της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής (2024–2029) και τον πυλώνα «Reuniting our societies, supporting our young people», το Συμπόσιο ανέδειξε την Κύπρο και το Κέντρο Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ ως στρατηγικό περιφερειακό κόμβο στο σταυροδρόμι της Ευρώπης, της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου, της Μέσης Ανατολής, της Βόρειας Αφρικής και της περιοχής του Κόλπου.
Κατά τη διάρκεια δύο ημερών, οι συμμετέχοντες εξέτασαν νομικές, εγκληματολογικές, τεχνολογικές και γεωπολιτικές διαστάσεις της προστασίας πολιτιστικών αγαθών, μέσα από τέσσερις θεματικές ενότητες:
- Ευρωπαϊκές και Διεθνείς Θεσμικές Προσεγγίσεις
- Επιχειρησιακά Εργαλεία και Εφαρμογές Πεδίου
- Μουσεία και Εθνικές Αρχές στην Προστασία της Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς
- Νομικές και Εγκληματολογικές Προσεγγίσεις
Συμμετοχή υψηλού επιπέδου
Η Τελετή Έναρξης πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 20 Απριλίου 2026, με χαιρετισμούς από την Α.Ε. Δρ Βασιλική Κασσιανίδου, Υφυπουργό Πολιτισμού της Κύπρου, τον Δρ Πανίκο Πουργουρίδη, Επικεφαλής της Αντιπροσωπείας της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής στην Κύπρο, την Α.Ε. Antonella Cavallari, Πρέσβειρα της Ιταλίας στην Κύπρο, τον Α.Ε. Sergii Nizhynskyi, Πρέσβη της Ουκρανίας στην Κύπρο, τη Δρ Katariina Leinonen από την Ευρωπαϊκή Υπηρεσία Εξωτερικής Δράσης, την κα Medea Sogor Ekner, Γενική Διευθύντρια του ICOM, καθώς και τον Καθηγητή Διόφαντο Χατζημιτσή, Διευθύνοντα Σύμβουλο του Κέντρου Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ.
Μεταξύ των κεντρικών ομιλητών περιλαμβάνονταν εκπρόσωποι της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής (DG EAC), του ICOM, του ICCROM, του UNODC, της INTERPOL, της OSCE Heritage Crime Task Force, της Ιταλικής Διοίκησης Carabinieri για την Προστασία της Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς, της Αστυνομίας Κύπρου, καθώς και οργανισμών από την περιοχή του Κόλπου, όπως τα Qatar Museums, η Qatar National Library και η Saudi Heritage Commission. Συμμετείχαν επίσης εκπρόσωποι εθνικών φορέων και κορυφαίων ακαδημαϊκών ιδρυμάτων, μεταξύ των οποίων το Πανεπιστήμιο του Μάαστριχτ, το Καθολικό Πανεπιστήμιο του Μιλάνου και η Έδρα UNESCO του Ιονίου Πανεπιστημίου.
Στο πλαίσιο του Συμποσίου, το Κέντρο Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ παρουσίασε την πλατφόρμα V.E.R.I.T.A.S., ένα καινοτόμο εργαλείο τεχνητής νοημοσύνης για τον εντοπισμό παράνομα διακινούμενων έργων τέχνης σε διαδικτυακές αγορές, αναδεικνύοντας τη συμβολή της Κύπρου στην ανάπτυξη τεχνολογιών αιχμής για την προστασία της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς.

ΣΧΕΤΙΚΑ ΜΕ ΤΟ ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΑΡΙΣΤΕΙΑΣ ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ
Το Κέντρο Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ είναι ένα κέντρο έρευνας και καινοτομίας με έδρα τη Λεμεσό της Κύπρου, το οποίο ιδρύθηκε στο πλαίσιο του έργου EXCELSIOR (Excellence Research Centre for Earth Surveillance and Space-Based Monitoring of the Environment). Το έργο χρηματοδοτήθηκε μέσω του προγράμματος Horizon 2020 – Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation / Teaming Phase 2, με συνολική επένδυση άνω των 38 εκατομμυρίων ευρώ.
Το Κέντρο εξειδικεύεται στην Παρατήρηση της Γης, την Τηλεπισκόπηση, τη Διαστημική Τεχνολογία και τη Γεωπληροφορική. Μέσω του Τομέα Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς, αναπτύσσει προηγμένες μεθοδολογίες και τεχνολογίες για την τεκμηρίωση, παρακολούθηση και προστασία της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς στην Ευρώπη, τη Μεσόγειο και πέραν αυτής.
