CARBON 4 SOIL QUALITY PLUS (C4SQ+) is an Interreg Euro-MED project focused on testing and validating carbon-farming practices to improve soil quality, enhance organic carbon soil, and support climate change mitigation across Mediterranean agricultural systems.
The project brings together partners from Slovenia, Italy, Greece, Spain, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Cyprus to assess the effectiveness of carbon-farming techniques in improving soil health under diverse Mediterranean agroecological conditions. Through pilot field testing and demonstrations, stakeholder engagement and capacity building, C4SQ+ aims to establish Carbon-Farming Living Labs to support farmers, advisors, and decision-makers in adopting effective carbon farming solutions while strengthening the evidence base for their environmental, social, and economic benefits. Key project outputs include a Mediterranean Carbon Farming Technique Catalogue, a web-based Decision Support Tool, Guidelines for Carbon Farming Socio-Economic Models, training materials, and a Transnational Carbon Farming Strategy to support the wider uptake of carbon farming practices across the Mediterranean region.
Within the project, the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (ECoE) will lead the implementation and monitoring of pilot activities in Cyprus, where different carbon farming techniques will be tested under local conditions. ECoE will also contribute to the establishment of Carbon-Farming Living Labs, capacity-building activities, and actions that promote the adoption of carbon farming solutions by farmers and other stakeholders. Through field experimentation, environmental monitoring, and stakeholder engagement activities, ECoE will assess the impacts of carbon-farming practices on soil quality, carbon sequestration, and sustainable agricultural management, supported by its expertise in Earth Observation and remote sensing technologies.
