Memorandum of Understanding between the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO and the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence
The Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO and the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, marking the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at promoting UNESCO’s principles, values and priorities through joint initiatives in the fields of cultural heritage, the natural environment, scientific research, education and intercultural cooperation.
The signing ceremony took place at the “Christodoulos Sozos” Rectorate Building of the Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol, in the presence of representatives of both organisations, researchers and partners. The Memorandum was signed by Professor Diofantos Hadjimitsis, Managing Director of the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence, and Dr Marina Solomidou Ieronymidou, President of the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO, reaffirming the shared commitment of both organisations to establishing a long-term and meaningful collaboration for the benefit of cultural heritage, science and society.
The Memorandum establishes a framework for the development of joint initiatives that build on the complementary expertise of the two organisations. The collaboration will focus on the application of geospatial and digital technologies for the protection, preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, including efforts to combat the looting and illicit trafficking of cultural property. It also provides for the joint organisation of scientific and educational events, the preparation of studies and proposals for participation in UNESCO programmes, international initiatives and funding opportunities, as well as the promotion of research, innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of cultural heritage.
Through this partnership, the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence and the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO aspire to implement collaborative actions that will strengthen the protection and sustainable management of cultural and natural heritage, harness the potential of advanced technologies for the benefit of society, and enhance Cyprus’ contribution to international efforts in science, culture and sustainable development.
The Memorandum of Understanding enters into force on 1 July 2026 and has an initial duration of four years, with the possibility of renewal. It represents an important milestone in establishing a long-term framework for cooperation that will evolve through joint projects, initiatives and activities in the years ahead.
Μνημόνιο Συνεργασίας μεταξύ της Κυπριακής Εθνικής Επιτροπής UNESCO και του Κέντρου Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ
Η Κυπριακή Εθνική Επιτροπή UNESCO και το Κέντρο Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ υπέγραψαν σήμερα, Τετάρτη 1 Ιουλίου 2026, Μνημόνιο Συνεργασίας, εγκαινιάζοντας μια στρατηγική συνεργασία με στόχο την προώθηση των αρχών, των αξιών και των προτεραιοτήτων της UNESCO μέσω κοινών δράσεων στους τομείς της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς, του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος, της επιστημονικής έρευνας, της εκπαίδευσης και της διαπολιτισμικής συνεργασίας.
Η τελετή υπογραφής πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Κτήριο Πρυτανείας «Χριστόδουλος Σώζος» του Τεχνολογικού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου στη Λεμεσό, παρουσία εκπροσώπων των δύο οργανισμών. Το Μνημόνιο υπέγραψαν ο Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος του Κέντρου Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ, Καθηγητής Διόφαντος Χατζημιτσής, και η Πρόεδρος της Κυπριακής Εθνικής Επιτροπής UNESCO, Δρ. Μαρίνα Σολομίδου Ιερωνυμίδου, επιβεβαιώνοντας τη βούληση των δύο οργανισμών να αναπτύξουν μια ουσιαστική και μακροχρόνια συνεργασία προς όφελος της κυπριακής πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς, της επιστήμης και της κοινωνίας.
Το Μνημόνιο δημιουργεί το πλαίσιο για την ανάπτυξη κοινών πρωτοβουλιών που αξιοποιούν τη συμπληρωματική τεχνογνωσία των δύο οργανισμών. Η συνεργασία επικεντρώνεται στην αξιοποίηση γεωχωρικών και ψηφιακών τεχνολογιών για την προστασία και ανάδειξη της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της υποστήριξης δράσεων για την καταπολέμηση της σύλησης και της παράνομης διακίνησης πολιτιστικών αγαθών. Παράλληλα, προβλέπει τη συνδιοργάνωση επιστημονικών και εκπαιδευτικών εκδηλώσεων, την από κοινού προετοιμασία μελετών και προτάσεων για συμμετοχή σε διεθνή προγράμματα και καταλόγους της UNESCO, καθώς και την προώθηση της έρευνας, της καινοτομίας και της επιχειρηματικότητας στον τομέα της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς.
Μέσα από τη συνεργασία αυτή, το Κέντρο Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ και η Κυπριακή Εθνική Επιτροπή UNESCO φιλοδοξούν να αναπτύξουν κοινές δράσεις που θα ενισχύσουν την προστασία και βιώσιμη διαχείριση της πολιτιστικής και φυσικής κληρονομιάς, θα αξιοποιήσουν τις δυνατότητες της σύγχρονης τεχνολογίας προς όφελος της κοινωνίας και θα συμβάλουν στην ενίσχυση της διεθνούς παρουσίας της Κύπρου στους τομείς της επιστήμης, του πολιτισμού και της βιώσιμης ανάπτυξης.
Το Μνημόνιο Συνεργασίας τίθεται σε ισχύ από την 1η Ιουλίου 2026, έχει αρχική διάρκεια τεσσάρων ετών με δυνατότητα ανανέωσης και αποτελεί το πρώτο βήμα για την ανάπτυξη ενός πλαισίου στενής συνεργασίας που θα εξελίσσεται μέσα από κοινά έργα, δράσεις και πρωτοβουλίες τα επόμενα χρόνια.
