ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence and India Explore Strategic Cooperation in Space Entrepreneurship and Earth Observation The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence had the distinct honour of welcoming, on Tuesday 2 September 2025, His Excellency Mr. Manish, High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Cyprus, to its premises for an official diplomatic visit and high-level meeting. This meeting opened a constructive dialogue aimed at establishing a sustainable and mutually beneficial collaboration between the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence and Indian government bodies, research organisations, and the private sector. Discussions placed particular emphasis on: • Cyprus’ strategic geographic position as a gateway between Europe, the Middle East and Asia • The upcoming Cyprus EU Presidency 2026 • The Centre’s advanced expertise and infrastructure in Earth Observation, Remote Sensing, and Geoinformation • The newly launched Space BIC by ERATOSTHENES, the first Space Business Incubation Centre in Cyprus, designed to support startups and entrepreneurs in the space sector, creating opportunities for cross-border cooperation and innovation • ERATOSTHENES’ state-of-the-art services and platforms, including: o The PRECiRRI platform for smart agriculture o The NADIRISK system for natural disaster risk assessment o The Satellite Data Acquisition Station (sDAS), now fully operational o Collectively, these platforms support data-driven decision-making in climate and society resilience, environmental monitoring, and sustainable development • Educational and training programmes in space technologies and applications • Opportunities for joint actions in technology and innovation Both sides highlighted the importance of exchange of good practices and the potential for staff exchanges, strengthening research collaboration, entrepreneurship, and capacity-building in space and Earth observation technologies. His Excellency Mr. Manish was accompanied by Mr. Subhash C. Kain, Second Secretary of the High Commission of India in Cyprus. On behalf of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, the meeting was attended by Professor Diofantos Hadjimitsis, Managing Director; Professor Andreas Anayiotos, Director of the Technology Transfer Office; Dr. Kyriacos Themistocleous, External Affairs & Business Development Director; Mr. Andreas Andreou, Business Development and Technology Commercialization Executive; Mr. Neal Peter Beckett, Business Development Officer; and Mrs. Eliana Iliofotou, Head of Communication. Professor Andreas Anayiotos noted: “India is a global leader in space research and entrepreneurship, and this dialogue sets the stage for a truly impactful collaboration. Through the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence and initiatives like the Space BIC, we see a unique opportunity to connect Cyprus and India in fostering startups, innovation, and scientific excellence for the benefit of both regions.” The meeting was held in a constructive spirit and laid the groundwork for a long-term partnership between Cyprus and India in space entrepreneurship, Earth observation, and technology innovation. The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence reaffirms its commitment to building strong international alliances that leverage scientific excellence and innovation in Earth Observation and Space Technology across the EMMENA region and beyond.
