Presentation of the pioneering mobile 3D mapping system by the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence showcases ‘Mobile 3D Mapping for Digital Twin Development’ project

The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (ECoE) announces the successful completion of the OPEN INFRA/0625/0016 project titled 3D-TWINMAP: Mobile 3D Mapping for Digital Twin Development”, with a total budget of € 483,092.40, coordinated by Dr. Marios Tzouvaras, Research Coordinator of ECoE. The Project OPEN INFRA/0625/0016 is funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility of the NextGenerationEU instrument, through the Research and Innovation Foundation.

The 3D-TWINMAP project started in October 2025, with its end date being 31 March 2026. The project aimed to establish a state-of-the-art mobile 3D mapping capability within the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (ECoE) to support the creation and use of Digital Twins in Cyprus. It focused on the acquisition and operational deployment of a high-precision, AI-powered mobile mapping system capable of rapidly capturing dense 3D geospatial data across large-scale built environments. The project’s objectives are to: (i) reinforce the ECoE research infrastructure with advanced mobile 3D mapping technology, (ii) enable the rapid and efficient generation of high-resolution Digital Twins, (iii) enhance service provision to public

authorities, academia, and private stakeholders in domains such as urban spatial planning, transportation, and environmental monitoring, and (iv) elevate Cyprus’ national innovation capacity in the field of 3D mapping and Digital Twin development.

The methodology included early procurement and installation of the equipment, comprehensive training of technical staff, technical validation through an Operational Readiness Review, and the design and implementation of an Open Access Policy for external users. Anticipated results include the deployment of a fully functional 3D mapping unit, enhanced technical capacity at ERATOSTHENES CoE, and use-case scenarios displaying the system’s potential. The project’s impact lies in strengthening research excellence, improving digital public services, and accelerating the adoption of Digital Twin technologies aligned with national and European priorities for digital and green transition priorities.

The project’s infrastructure and results were presented last Monday, 30 March 2026 at the project’s final workshop that took place at the Limassol Municipality Blue Innovation Centre in Limassol, Cyprus. The event was attended by over 50 participants from academia, public sector, industry and the public, allowing ERATOSTHENES CoE researchers to effectively disseminate the project’s results to a wide audience. The event concluded with an open discussion among participants, to seek ways for further collaboration, exploiting the project’s results even after the end of the project.
